This hasn’t been an easy decision to make, although the rationale behind it is actually rather simple – the show’s recorded during the day on Monday, and this is a day that I now have to work on.

When we started doing the show back in January 2006 all our schedules were the same. All four of us work at the weekend, with Monday being the day we all had free. Even if I worked on a Monday, my shift pattern still allowed me to record the show. But since I changed jobs in March I find myself working almost every Monday (my next one off is in mid-July, while the other three lads’ schedules are the same).

It’s almost 18 months since I came up with the idea of doing a football podcast. I’d scoured iTunes and the rest of the web for a decent show, but to no avail. I felt there must be at least a few people around the world feeling likewise so decided to ask Chris, Noel and Alex R (who joined the show a little later as he was out of the country when we began) if they fancied putting something together.

I think that what had transpired since then has been a success and hope you feel likewise. The amount of work Chris, Noel and Alex R have put it to the show is absolutely phenomenal, and I’d like to thank them all for producing a podcast of the highest quality. If our real jobs didn’t get in the way I think TBG could have been even better, but I’m extremely happy with how things have turned out.

I wanted us to do a show that was a little bit different – with no ranting and swearing. I wanted it to be offbeat and irreverent, while still being informative and, occasionally, even entertaining. It’s always been a hard balance to maintain, but I think the lads have done a magnificent job in getting it just right. Chris, Noel and Alex R all stamped their unique characters on the show. Their research, writing, production and presentation skills are all very different, but always of the highest quality.

I’d also like to thank my wife Angela – who can be heard at the start of each episode reminding you what you’re listening to – for all her patience. It took some serious hours to get the show up and running, and she was always very understanding and supportive.

Finally, I’d like to thank all our listeners for the tremendous support you’ve given us. We’ve never made a penny from the show (indeed, we’ve lost a fair bit!), and it’s purely the kind words and knowledgeable comments from fans all over the world that have kept us going.

It’s been a brilliant experience being part of TBG and thank you so much for making it so enjoyable. Your support has helped our show (independently produced and never advertised) compete with the podcasts put together by national newspapers and global media organisations.

So wherever you are, and whoever you support, please keep enjoying The Beautiful Game

Alex K

EPISODE 2:35

This week on The Beautiful Game

Drogba and Chelsea make Wembley history as Manchester United's double vision fades

Liverpool aim for 6 of the best, but will Kaka and Milan block their path to glory. A 2-2 draw on the night meant a 4-3 aggregate defeat, and I'm absolutely gutted that all dreams of silverware are over for another season.

Having blown a 2-0 lead against Arsenal in the Carling Cup semi-finals, and a 3-1 advantage over Chelsea in the FA Cup quarter-finals, it's once more a case of what might have been.

This time defeat was not all of Spurs' own doing. A scandalous penalty decision in the first leg turned the tie, but I have to admit the team who sit second only to Barcelona in Spain's La Liga were deserved winners.

For what it's worth I have loved every minute of the European adventure. I've sampled the delights of Prague and Sevilla; not just splendid cities, but football clubs with a proud tradition and magnificent fans. Here's hoping Spurs can somehow finish 6th in the Premiership (or 7th if that proves enough) and set up another continental adventure for 2007/08.

Chris, TBG

Episode 2:29

English supporters suffer at the hands of brute force in Europe as they discover there's no place like Rome.

It's squeaky bum time in the Premiership title race after Manchester United allow Chelsea to halve the gap.

The Addicks acquire an unbeaten habit to move out of the relegation zone.

And Tales of the Unexpected - we discuss some of football's more memorable U-turns.

Enjoy the show,

Noel and Alex R (Chris and Alex K will be back soon)

 Podshow PDN {podshow-93fa913767c646e823305737386e6cfe}

THE PAIN IN SPAIN

I have literally just returned from my trip to Sevilla where unfortunately crowd trouble marred the first leg of Tottenham's 2-1 UEFA Cup defeat. I had a great view of the situation, but was luckily far enough away not to be involved. The only bit I can't be sure of is why the riot police turned up. I had seen no trouble before their arrival, but when they moved into position their presence seemed to provoke the trouble. Many Spurs fans had the time and space to get away from the situation before it degenerated, but a small handful - maybe 20 - decided to take the police on. Unfortunately some who were unable to get away also ended up being hit by batons; these people included a fan in a wheelchair, someone who slipped as they tried to retreat and a young lady. I make no excuses for those who simply wanted to have a go at the police, but I do feel the situation was badly handled. There were few stewards and no segregation in the stadium - but there was no trouble BETWEEN fans. In the first 20 minutes of the game before the riot police arrived, and in the second half when they were absent, Sevilla and Tottenham fans sat pretty much side-by-side with no hint of trouble. You can see the video footage I managed to shoot of the incident at myspace.com/beautifulgamepodcast and on YouTube at beautifulgamepodcast. (NB: Please be warned you can hear some foul language from some fans nearby).

Chris

Episode 2:28

National lampoon - Steve McClaren is brow-beaten in Barcelona as England face the unthinkable prospect of swapping Euro 2008 for a European vacation next summer.

Some forward thinking from Carlos Tevez and Darren Bent puts West Ham and Charlton within striking distance of Premiership safety.

And we boldly take our interactivity to a new level as we answer YOUR questions in Defend Your Corner and let YOU decide the winner.

Enjoy the show,

Chris & Noel (both Alexs had better things to do this week)

 Podshow PDN {podshow-93fa913767c646e823305737386e6cfe}

Episode 2:27

The Promised Bland - England's star wanes further in Israel; now they must avoid making a mountain out of an Andorran molehill.

The new Wembley can cater for 8,000 beer drinkers a minute, but is it the best stadium in the world?
